We are off on our annual vacation with our boating friends Jack & Moon Canon, Al & Sue Smith, and Larry & Cheryl Martin. This year we are headed to the San Juans and then the Gulf Islands (Canadian San Juans). We will be spending the last few days in Victoria with the Edmonds Yacht Club for their local festival Splash. This is going to be a great 12 days and we have really been looking forward to it.
We stayed on our boat last night so we could get an early
start. We left the Everett Marina at 5:30 with Al & Sue.
We met up with
Jack & Moon at Langley then headed toward Deception Pass with a target time
of 9:30 in order to hit slack tide. We arrived there about 9:40 and it was
smooth sailing through the pass. We arrived at Blakely Island around 11:30 then
Larry & Cheryl arrived shortly after.
This is a lovely little marina – very quiet, not very many
boats, but plenty of room for relaxing and wandering around the marina. As soon
as we were tied up, Bob and I took the dinghy out to a little cove where we
dropped two crab pots. Our hope was to have enough crab to share for our
appetizer dinner tonight. When we went back about 4 hours later, we were
thrilled to discover 9 crabs in our pots – 5 of which met the size requirements
and were all male. The other four were too small, anyway, so it worked out very
well since 5 was our limit and we had one license.
This afternoon we also sought out the one geocache that is on the island and we found it on a man-made rock peninsula that juts out at the entrance to the marina. We had given up trying to find it but I just happened to catch a glimpse of the container under a rock as we were leaving. It was about half way between the bell and the mainland.
Tonight when we gathered for our appetizers, we were joined by a former co-worker of Sue’s and his wife, as well as their guests. We had a very nice visit and then went back to our boat for some quiet time and reading.
